I LOVE antiquing! Especially at one of the local antique stores here in Monroe, WA! I always seem to come across a great little find when I’m out for walks with my daughter. Plus, it’s SO great to meet the local store owners and build relationships with them. Well, yesterday, Miss B and I were out for one of our many strolls and I popped in to browse the antique store to see if they had any goodies and came across this super cute wire basket! It will be a great addition to my every growing prop collection {love you honey!} =)

I am also super excited that this antique store is going to display my newborn images in their store showing off the props I’ve purchased from them! Once the images are up I will post information about the store along with some pictures of their store. Can’t wait!

Oh! And I can’t forget to give honorable mention to Melvin for modeling the basket for me!

One on One Mentorship
Michelle Newell specializes in Maternity, Newborn, and Wedding Photography and now offers One on One Photography Mentorships for those who are actively pursuing a career in photography. This is a great opportunity to have an open discussion and ask Michelle anything to learn what it takes to make it in the photography business.

One on One Mentorship: $125* per hour with a 2 hour minimum

Booking: $75 USD is due at booking and is non-refundable

Beginner One on One Mentorship
Michelle Newell Photography also provides Beginner One on One Photography Mentorships, which includes a portrait session to learn tips and techniques with either a maternity session or a child from age 6 months to 10 years old. This is a great opportunity to build your portfolio and learn basic portrait techniques for building a strong portfolio.

What You Will Need:

  • Basic knowledge of Photoshop {please note: this is not an introduction to Photoshop. Michelle primarily uses Photoshop CS5 for editing and will be covering basic techniques for enhancing your images.}
  • You must own a DSLR. Michelle will cover basics to exposure and lighting etc.
  • A basic 50mm prime lens or 24-70mm lens is suggested as these are the lenses that Michelle uses primarily for portrait sessions.
  • {optional} Off Camera Speedlite Flash
  • Also, please bring up to five 8×10 or 8×12 prints for the portfolio review

One on One Mentorship with Portrait Session: $150* per hour with a 3 hour minimum

Booking: $195 USD is due at booking and is non-refundable

Michelle Newell Photography now offers Exclusively Newborn Mentorships in her studio in Monroe, Washington {approximately 40 minutes from Seattle, WA}. During your Mentorship with Michelle, you will learn everything from the basics of proper lighting {using a soft box and natural light}, composition, newborn soothing, to safely posing newborns as well as build your portfolio. Michelle will also cover basic Photoshop editing to enhance your post processing. This is also a great opportunity to ask Michelle anything, from posing to business processes.

What You Will Need:

  • You must own a DSLR and understand your camera. We will be shooting in Manual mode, and it will be assumed that you have a basic understanding of aperture, shutter speed and ISO settings.
  • A basic 50mm Lens is suggested as this is the lens that Michelle uses primarily throughout her newborn sessions along with her 100mm Macro lens {this is optional, but please bring it if you own this lens}
  • Basic knowledge of Photoshop {please note: this is not an introduction to Photoshop. Michelle primarily uses Photoshop CS5 for editing and will be covering basic techniques for enhancing your images.}

What this is Not: This is not an introductory class to photography. This is an intermediate to advanced photography mentorship for those who are actively pursuing a career in newborn portraiture.

Tuition: $895*/per person {+tax} – One Day Class

Attendees: Limited 1-3 photographers {bring a friend!}

Registration: $375 USD is due at booking and is non-refundable. Remaining balance is due 1-week prior to class. If you need to cancel for any reason once you have paid-in-full, your balance will be reimbursed to you.

Date: Mentorships are scheduled on a Saturday of which the specific date will be determined by Michelle & attendee{s}

Time: Determined by Attendees & Michelle

I LOVE these hats and am SO PROUD of my cousin, Adrian, for launching her line called EmeryNoelle Hats on Etsy.com! She does a fabulous job and I love to use them for my newborn and baby sessions. Below are a few of her newest creations {there are more on her Etsy Store!} And can I just say, I  LOOOOOOOOOVE the grey and pink hippo hat! Can’t wait to use mine in an upcoming 6-month sessions! SO ADORABLE!

After taking the product shots, I couldn’t resist getting some images of the beautiful Miss Emery with some fun new headbands I found. She is such a stunning baby and is so much fun to photograph. She’s just beautiful!

Today we ventured to IKEA for some MUCH needed prop finds. I’m always keeping my eye out for newborn and baby props and have needed to freshen up my newborn blankets. So we headed to IKEA where I could probably spend hours, but had to do a fast run through since our little one still has a nap schedule to stay on. I ended up finding 10 blankets and a new “faux” rug that I can’t wait to use! Then, once we got home I got inspired to clean out my prop closet, which doesn’t even hold everything… Anyhow ~ we had a fun morning! Can’t wait to meet all the new little ones of 2011!!

I have to admit, one of my FAVORITE subjects to photograph are newborns and babies! They are full of surprises and so much fun! Baby Kyliegh came for a visit yesterday for her 10 ~ month session and Mommy and I had a fun time distracting her with all kinds of fun noises and toys! =) I am sad to say though, this will be Kyleigh’s last session with me due to their family relocating to California. =( However, I am so excited for them because they will be closer to friends and family AND sunshine!!!

This past fall I gave my mom a little DIY project =) Since I don’t know how to sew {although I think I’m going to learn} I asked my mom if she would make me a HUGE Baby Ottoman to use for my newborn and baby portrait shoots. As I mentioned in my previous post, there are similar products out there and readily available to purchase like my Baby Ottoman. I used my Baby Ottoman for the first time yesterday during my 6 month session and LOVED it {below is a picture of it raw and in use} and I can’t wait to begin using it for my newborn sessions. For the past couple of years I have been using an overly stuffed beanbag, which has been GREAT! However, I was wanting to use it for baby portraits as well and it wasn’t working exactly the way I wanted it to… thus the change. If you are a photographer and looking for a similar product, check out these sources: one is called Shoot Baby based out of Australia and another called Newborn Nest out of Washington State. I’m looking forward to using my Baby Ottoman again today for my 9-month session.

The dimensions of my Baby Ottoman are:
* Height: approximately 12-15″
* Diameter: approximately 35-40″

I provided my mom with 4 yards of white vinyl fabric, which was more than enough. The top and bottom are two round circles. The sides are two separate pieces. The opening is shut closed with STRONG Velcro. I unfortunately do not have a pattern for this.

Oh! And before I forget, I also used my little Lens Bling {attention grabber} yesterday day as well. It caught baby’s attention for a little bit, but not for very long. Still fun to use though! I’m thinking I’ll need to pull it out for a couple sessions I’ve got coming up with adults too! It’d make for a good laugh! =))

Can you say CUTENESS?! Such a fun way to start off the New Year right! Baby Elle is a part of our Tiny Toes {Baby’s First Year} plan and I can’t believe how much she’s changed since her 3 month session. I say this every time and mean it, I absolutely love walking through the first year with our newborns because I get the chance of cooing and cuddling these adorably sweet treasures!

I also had the fun opportunity of using some props, one being some new hats created by my cousin Adrian. She does a fabulous job and has a store on Etsy.com called EmeryNoelle. I also was able to use one of my other new baby/newborn props that my mom made for me. I love it! There are some similar products out there that I would recommend. One is called Shoot Baby from Australia and another called Newborn Nest out of Washington State. Anyhow, here is Baby Elle’s adorable sneak peek! Enjoy!
