I have never really been a fan of winter in the Northwest. It is generally dreary, wet, and grey. Although, I have to say, the month of January is typically the best month during the winter season bringing cold and clear skies, which I love.
In January, the light is a beautiful blue color and bounces off of trees casting gorgeous shadows while it illuminates the green moss that clings to it. Occasionally we will get snow flurries throughout the month and maybe stick if we’re lucky.
This past week, winter decided to surprise us with huge silver dollar sized snow flakes that sagged down the trees by the heavy weight. It was a beautiful site! And to my surprise, the snow hasn’t melted yet at the elevation that we live at. I love looking out our windows and seeing the shimmery white blanket that covers our lawn.

The other day, I happened to be walking by our windows while the light streamed through the trees (image above). I literally gasped at the color and site. It was GORGEOUS. And then I had a thought… MUST – DO – MATERNITY – SHOOT!
I follow and admire a photographer on Facebook whose work I adore from Kamloops Canada. Lisa, who is the owner of Milk and Honey Photography, specializes in maternity and newborn portraits. Her images are soft and sensational. In the winter, instead of staying cooped up inside taking maternity portraits, she ventures outdoors in the snow (insert jealousy here
). So, when we got our blanket of snow and the light was streaming through the trees I HAD to take advantage of the moment because our snow comes and goes so quickly here.
About 2 years ago I worked on a special maternity project that allowed me to play creatively with the direction I wanted to take my maternity portraiture. My friend Camille happened to be pregnant with her first baby girl, so I asked her if she would be interested in being my model. It was a LOT of fun and she was such a sport while we drove all over the Snohomish Valley to various locations for me to shoot at. She was even so sweet as to go out a second time with me for another quick shoot.
Well, Camille just so happens to be pregnant with baby girl #2… So I shot her a quick text seeing if she would like to be a model for me in the snow this time. I was SO excited when she said yes! She is a beauuutiful expecting mommy!!
